Understand it
An edge, if one exists, is a repeatable advantage after realistic transaction costs and risk. Claims of an edge need a market, instrument, data timeframe, entry/exit rules, risk rules, outcome measures and evidence. Historical profitability is necessary to examine but not sufficient to predict the future. Be skeptical of stories that cannot be disproven by a predefined test.
A hypothesis says: 'During a specified session, a rule-based pullback following a measured trend has positive net expectancy after assumed costs.' This is testable. 'Buy when the chart looks strong' is not.
Watch for this misconception
Changing entry definitions after losing tests until historical returns look attractive without documenting revisions.
